One was still advertising 2024. One had 2025 pricing under a 2019 copyright. One had a real 2026 date and was two hundred miles away.
In late August I sat down to find out which pumpkin patches near Fargo-Moorhead had actually posted dates for this autumn. I expected the answer to take ten minutes. It took most of an afternoon, and the interesting part was not the patch I found — it was the three I did not.
What the four actually said
Lil Bitz Pumpkin Patch, out on 40th Avenue North in Fargo, publishes a season: "September 13, 2024 - October 26, 2024." The footer carries a 2018 copyright. Two seasons stale, and nothing on the page tells you that.
Thea's Pumpkin Patch, over in Pelican Rapids, is one better and still not current — 2025 dates, "2025 pricing Admission is $10", and a 2019 copyright underneath. It is also about sixty miles out, right at the edge of the area this site covers even if the dates had been right.
Deer Lake Orchard was the one that nearly caught me. It surfaces for "apple orchard near Fargo", it publishes a genuine 2026 opening, and everything about the page looks current. It is at 1903 10th Street SW in Buffalo, Minnesota — roughly two hundred miles away, near the Twin Cities. Right dates, wrong Buffalo.
Buffalo River Pumpkin Patch, fifteen miles east on Highway 10 at Glyndon, was the one with this year's season posted: opening Saturday 26 September, weekends ten to six, through 31 October.
Why the stale ones are the harder problem
A patch that has closed is easy. The website goes down, the link breaks, and any checker notices. A patch that is still online with last year's dates is the difficult case, because every automated test passes. The domain resolves. The page loads. The link returns a clean 200. Nothing anywhere reports that the content is two years old except the content itself, and only if you read it.
That is the whole reason this site records the date it last read a page rather than just whether the link works. Those are different questions and only one of them can be answered by a machine.
Deer Lake Orchard is the sharper version. It fails no test at all — current dates, live site, real business — and it is still the wrong answer, because the thing that is wrong about it is geography. The only way to catch that is to read the address.
One correction I had to make to myself
An earlier pass at this concluded that local growers simply had not posted their seasons yet. That conclusion came from checking exactly one patch. Buffalo River had published its dates the whole time.
A claim about a group needs more than one member of it. I had written down a fact about every pumpkin patch in the region on the strength of a single sample, and it was wrong.
So: Buffalo River, from the 26th. The others may well update — patches often do, late. If you check one yourself and find fresh dates, tell me and I will read it.
